Since becoming a Flickr addict, I've gradually come to realise that this blog is redundant. Flickr gives me an easier way to put photos online, it also has RSS feeds and between the sets and the tags it makes it much easier to organise them sensibly. So I'm going to stop updating this blog, and just use Flickr to show photos. If you want to see more of my photos, you can jump straight to:

My First HDR

As this picture demonstrates rather clearly, the basics of putting together multiple exposures to create a HDR image and get an interesting effect are easy, but making it look real is not. I kind of like this one as an expression of the mood of the forest, but I was actually going for realism and in that I think I failed.

This is from a trip last weekend to the westest coast, and some time I'll start putting sensible pictures up from that trip, but it may take me a while to process them because there are quite a few I want to apply this technique to with more realistic results, and I have a lot to learn.

Ride Of Silence

On Wednesday evening, I took part in Seattle's local contribution to the Ride of Silence, an international, slow, silent ride ro memorialise and draw attention to cyclists killed or injured on the road. Turnout was incredible (these pictures don't get the whole crowd—official estimates were around 700), and it was quite moving to be a part of this.

A recently-restored steamship; one of only two operating in the US right now. She used to do a daily Seattle - Tacoma - Seattle ferry service.

I had the pleasure of meeting the ship and her first mate at the Lake Union Sweep, and I volunteered for occasional unskilled deck hand work, which should be a nice way to get some free rides out to sea, and learn more about the area's maritime history.

That building was once where the huddled masses of legend were screened and processed, and most were welcomed into the country while a few were sent home. It's now a very interesting and rather moving museum.

This is the ferry from Battery Park to the statue of liberty & Ellis Island. I had been trying in vain to get pictures of the skyline without tourists' heads in them, until my cousin pointed out that the tourists are an interesting subject in themselves.
