One year ago
A year ago today something happened that has since done much to brighten up my life.Vinay, who was the first friend I made here outside my lab, had introduced me to a few of his friends. Among them was a woman with whom I quickly became quite infatuated. Naturally I assumed I couldn't possibly stand a chance with her. I had some good reasons for this: I had at this point been single for 5½ years, someone as lovely as her couldn't possibly stoop low enough to take an interest in me, and not to put too fine a point on it, heterosexual women in an engineering department are very much in the privileged position with respect to supply and demand.
But anyway, after some embarrassing
shit, I'm completely clueless, what do I do now?type email exchanges, especially with Vinay, I eventually realised that perhaps the feeling might just be mutual. A year ago today I lured her back to my house with the offer of tea, being too much of a coward to simply ask for a date. Tea was infact consumed (and I am eternally grateful to Giles for teaching me appropriate respect for tea; he couldn't possibly have known how well this would serve me), but this evening was—if you can forgive the cliché—also the beginning of something wonderful.
She, of course, was Melinda, and a year on I can look back at that day and say that every month since then I have become more glad that I met her.
Melinda, I love you. Happy anniversary!
